Dr. Farrar is the Director of Intergovernmental Affairs and Partnerships for the FDA Office of Foods and Veterinary Medicine. He provides leadership on FDA initiatives to build a national integrated food safety system with other federal, state and local government agencies, and manages high-level interagency policy issues. Dr. Farrar also assists state and local agencies with the implementation of the 2011 FDA Food Safety Modernization Act.

Dr. Farrar came to the FDA from the California Department of Public Health, where he was the Chief of the Food and Drug Branch and led a large and diverse state food, drug, and medical device regulatory program, as well as numerous environmental foodborne outbreak investigations. He has worked closely with numerous industries and agencies to develop preventative guidelines for safe food production and has co-authored numerous scientific publications.

Dr. Farrar graduated from the University of Tennessee College Of Veterinary Medicine in 1981, received his Master of Public Health degree from the University of Minnesota in 1983, and earned his Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of California-Davis in 1998. He is also a graduate of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Epidemic Intelligence Service training program.
